About the Powel House

Samuel Powel served as Philadelphia’s last mayor under British rule and its first mayor under the new United States republic. Mr. and Mrs. Powel established a reputation for lavish parties and counted among their guests George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, the Marquis de Lafayette, Benedict Arnold, and Peggy Shippen. Ghostly sightings and paranormal experiences are frequent at their 1765 mansion. It is believed to be haunted by at least three female spirits, and ghostly echoes from the Powels’ time period are often heard.

About the Physick House

Named after the “Father of American Surgery,“ Dr. Philip Syng Physick, the Physick House was built in 1786. Dr. Physick resided in the house from 1815 until his death in 1837. During that time, many patients came to the house to be seen by the esteemed surgeon. Dr. Physick’s legacy includes pioneering many surgery techniques and instruments, and remaining in Philadelphia to care for the sick during the yellow fever epidemic of 1793. Several supernatural experiences have occurred at the estate. They have been attributed to at least two different ghosts.

Both sites are maintained by PhilaLandmarks. For over 70 years, PhilaLandmarks has played a significant role in the historic preservation movement in Philadelphia by restoring, furnishing and presenting to the public its distinguished house museums, including Powel House, Physick House, Grumblethorpe, and Waynesborough.

Ghost Tour of the Haunted USS Olympia

October

Join us for a unique and memorable evening aboard the haunted battleship Olympia! From the time of the ship's commission in 1895, sailors said it was “hoodooed,” and over 100 years later, ghost hunters (such as Sci-Fi’s Ghost Hunters and the Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures) are still drawn to her haunting legacy. Inside the hulking exterior, you’ll discover a beautiful, labyrinthine interior filled with reports of disappearing apparitions, ghostly voices, and other unexplained paranormal activity. The Ghost Tour will lead you through the creepy nooks and crannies of three decks, including the captain’s cabins, the galley, the sick bay, and the spot where the ship’s most famous ghost, “Gunner” Johnson, appears.
